July 4: Freedom Four® Four-Mile Run
Age: 6 +
Join the biggest event of the running season! The star-spangled 4-mile Freedom Four starts off from behind the Glenbard West football field at 8 am “sharp” on July 4. This year there will be nine age divisions. Awards will be presented to the top two male and female finishers in each division at 9 am on the football field. A Freedom Four shirt will be guaranteed to every pre-registered participant and given to day of race registrants while supplies last. Postcards will be available on site within 20 minutes of your finish time to every participant with their race time and place in both their category and overall. Total results will be posted on the web at www.drkomputing.com. Race packets for pre-registered participants will be available for pick-up in the fitness center between 8 am and 5 pm. at the Spring Avenue Recreation Center (185 Spring Ave.) Saturday, June 20th. Day-of-race registration and packet pick-up will begin at 6 am and will end at 7:30 am. So if you haven’t picked up your packet or still need to register, get there early. [DK]

July 4: Afternoon Festivities at Lake Ellyn from 1:30 pm-4:30 pm
Age: all
Join the Glen Ellyn Park District for a day of summer fun on the Fourth of July! The event runs from 1:30-4:30 and is the perfect activity for families after watching the Fourth of July Parade. Participants may purchase a $2.00 wristband to enjoy all of the action at Lake Ellyn. We are thankful for the generous donations from Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Jaycees! 2009 festivities will include:

  • Moonwalks
  • Inflatable Obstacle Course
  • Kristen’s Crocodile Adventure
  • Ten Penny Carnival games with tickets redeemable for lots of prizes
  • Live music and dancing
  • Concessions and Sno Cones
  • Face Painting

Be sure to bring your family for a couple hours of fun at the lake!

July 10: Movie at the Lake
Age: all
Come out to Lake Ellyn and enjoy a movie for the entire family! The park district will be showing Madagascar 2, Escape Africa, one of 2008’s funny family movies! Concessions will be available for purchase, so bring some money. Gather up the family and come down to one of the park district’s most beautiful parks. Be sure to remember bug spray. If it rains, the event will be cancelled. Be sure to check the Website at www.gepark.org or the Hotline at 630-858-0920 for event cancellation. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in parks. [CE]

July 15: Summer Jazz in the Park

Are you looking for a relaxing night out with wonderful music? We have teamed up with 90.9 FM WDCB to present three summer jazz concerts in the park. Come listen to the Glen Ellyn Jazz Ensemble, a 16-member group playing a mix of your favorite Big Band tunes. The Jazz Ensemble has appeared at the Taste of Glen Ellyn, the Festival of the Arts, and other area events. Jazz in the park brings a touch of Ravinia to Glen Ellyn. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs and picnic dinner. In case of rain or severe weather, the concert will be cancelled - call 630-858-0920 cancellation info. [CE]

Armed with nets, jars and bug boxes we’ll search ponds, fields and woods for insects, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, snails and more. A Glen Ellyn Park District tradition continues as we welcome you to our annual Family Fun Night! We’re having a party and the whole town is invited! Join us Wednesday, July 22 from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm for our annual FREE event at Lake Ellyn that’s fun for the whole family. As always, the Park District is pleased to provide pony rides, games, crafts and fun, family-oriented entertainment and much more, at no cost to your family. So load everyone in the car and head down to Lake Ellyn for a fantastic family night out, on us! Refreshments will be available for purchase at this event. [JR]

Age: All
Churchill Park is the one true “natural” park owned by the park district. It has many great features and lots of potential. Buckthorn and honeysuckle, both non-native aggressive plants, have taken a hold of this gem in the wooded areas. Most work will focus on cutting and stacking brush, but will also include collecting and spreading native seeds, plantings, and trail work. This is a great activity for scouts and families, ages 5 and up. If you have work gloves, a bow saw or loppers, please bring them. We will supply tools, gloves and goggles as well. We will meet in the parking lot, located east of Bloomingdale Road. Each workday is on a Saturday and runs from 9 am-11 a.m. Instructor: Renae Frigo. [SS]

July 26: Boating at Lake Ellyn

Come sailing at Lake Ellyn! Pack a picnic, bring your family and enjoy a nice walk around the lake, your favorite picnic lunch, and a boat ride to finish off the day. Small boats will be available to rent in 20-minute increments. The Park Distinct will provide picnic tables and music. No grilling allowed except in the designated area (three grills available).

July 28: Wrigley Field Tour & Lunch

Cub fans, this trip is for you! Register now for this limited ticket trip. Cub fans will have a chance to tour historical Wrigley Field in the following areas: Cubs clubhouse, press box, visitors’ clubhouse, bleachers, dugouts, on-deck circles, mezzanine suites and security headquarters. The tour will run 90 minutes. After that, we will head to a local restaurant around the park to have some lunch. We will head back to the park district after lunch. [CE]

Join us for a day of events that have gone to the dogs! Poochapalooza puts dogs front and center for an event-filled afternoon that includes an agility training course, demonstrations and plenty of pet-related vendors! Each pooch will receive a goody bag filled with treats! All dogs must remain leashed while in park.
